'Original work from contemporary artists for all tastes . . . '
Anglo Japanese potter Ian Tomii, working from his studio in Nottinghamshire, specialises in the art of Raku.
Raku Pottery was first developed in 16th Century Japan and involves red hot glazed pieces being removed from a kiln with long tongs and plunged into sawdust – which instantly bursts into flames. After a short period the pieces are covered and smoked until cool.
Chance plays an important part in Raku with every pot having unique characteristics created by the random interplay of fire, smoke and air.
